Gozatu Txakolí de Álava 2014, Spain (£12.49 Laithwaites)
Smells as if it’s going to be quite bracing, with pithy grapefruit and green apple prominent, but while those flavours are there when you taste it, there’s also richer, muskier guava and quince note, plus a touch of honey. More than a little in common with dry Jurançon – no surprise as the Hondarrabi Zuri and Hondarrabi Zuri Zerratia are the same as Courbu Blanc and Petit Courbu of South West France. Very tasty. S-
Torres Verdeo Verdejo 2014, Rueda, Spain (£8.99 Partridges, Hoults, Mitchells, Last Drop Wines)
Another one that’s richer than it smells, with tangy lemon and orange notes fleshed out by more rounded ripe pear, plump grape and creamy nutty flavours. Quite a powerful style, but there’s always that citrus bite to give freshness. B+
