Calvet Limited Release Sauvignon Blanc 2010, Bordeaux, France (£6.49 Tesco, Sainsbury’s, Morrisons, Waitrose)
Crisp zesty young wine, with refreshing grapefruit and lemon flavours plus a slightly ripe nectarine edge, and a touch lemon-grass herbiness. B(+)
McHenry Hohnen Semillon Sauvignon 2010, Margaret River, Australia (£11.99 – £12.99 Bablake Wines, The City Beverage Co, Flagship Wines, Flourish & Prosper, Francis Fine Wines, General Wine Company, Hailsham Cellars, The Wine Society, Eaton Wine Company, Peckhams)
A rounder, riper style, not as obviously zesty, but still fresh and pithy. Tangy citrus & greengage flavours, plus some toasty roundness and spice, rich and punchy but still refreshing. S(-)
Errázuriz Single Vineyard Sauvignon Blanc 2010, Casablanca, Chile (£9.99 Majestic, Slurp.co.uk)
Sauvignon for Chardonnay fans, this is quite weighty and ripe, with peachy vanilla and candied peel character, and while there’s a touch of citrus, it’s that Rose’s Lime Juice aromatic oiliness. But the finish is keen and taut, with a herby mineral bite. S(-)
Cloudy Bay Sauvignon Blanc 2011, Marlborough, New Zealand (£18.99 widely available)
Still a pup, but poised to pounce, this has quite exuberant lemon and gooseberry flesh held in check by grassy mineral notes and a touch of tomato leaf. Confident and tasty, and getting better with every sip. S
