Ramos Reserva Red 2011, VR Alentejano (£8.49 Majestic)
Warm-hearted wine, full and rounded with juicy blackberry jam flavours tempered by an earthy plumminess. Maybe just a little jammy, and possibly too polished for some purists but this is a good glug. B+
João Portugal Ramos F’OZ 2011, VR Alentejano (£9.99 Waitrose)
A more relaxed, old-fashioned style that the Ramos Reserva, and all the better for it, with laid back, savoury notes to the dark berry and plum flesh, and notes of herbs and tobacco to add interest. S-
Azamor Red 2008 (£10.99 see below for stockists – Liberty Wines is the agent)
Soft, gentle and appealing style, with a warm earthy herbiness and a touch of molasses adding rustic charm to the fresh berry, plum and damson flavours. S
Azamor Selected Vines 2007 (£18.99 Vagabond Wines, The Fine Wine Company, West Mount Wine, Liberty Wines)
More concentrated than the regular Azamor, but is this trying too hard? There’s a too-late-picked raisinny feel to the fruit, and this plus a touch of brett dries out the finish and dampens the appeal. B-
