The first instalment of a set of random whites I tasted in May – the second is here.
Torres Viña Sol 2010, Catalunya, Spain (£5.97-£6.99 Asda, Tesco, Sainsbury’s, Waitrose, Booths)
An old fave that’s as good as ever, clean zippy and fresh with abundant crisp apple flavour and citrus tang – classic seafood wine. B(+)
Mas des Mas Pinot Blanc ‘Zucco Vineyard’ 2010, Vin de France (£9.99 Majestic)
A touch of toffee, and some earthy, clay-like notes add interest to the rich core of peachy pineapple chunk flavour, not hugely aromatic, but a nice juicy tender style. B(+)
PS – Jean Claude, if you’re reading this, you need to update your web site…)
Bodegas Menade Verdejo 2010, Rueda, Spain (£5.92 vinissimus.co.uk)
Charming youngster offering a good balance between taut green apple, grapefruit and fennel flavours and a peachy cashew-like richness – bring on the garlic prawns… S-
Mont Tauch L’Ancien Comté Grenache Blanc Vin de Pays de la Vallée du Paradis 2010, Languedoc, France (£7.95 Jeroboams)
Weighty young wine, slightly waxy and honeyed, and has bold flavours of peaches, pineapple and kumquat, plus a touch of minerality. Would be even better with a little more tang and freshness, but then that’s not Grenache Blanc’s style. B+
