Sercial: Pungent and intelligent, with scalp-itching freshness, this feels sweeter than some Sercials, but it’s still beautifully vibrant and nutty, with zesty citrus peel acidity to balance the Christmas cake fruit and spices. S(-)

Verdelho: Not hugely sweeter (seemingly) than the Sercial, deeper in colour, and still with the fruit cake notes, but this is richer and more raisinny, and there’s a character not too far removed from that of Islay malts. Lovely gentle wine, juicy but complex and persistent. S(+)

Bual: Feels older than 10 years, with notes of old mahogany furniture alongside the Christmassy character and nuances of coffee, chocolate and tobacco too. Superb balance between unctuous sweetness and tangy citrus peel acidity, a complete, confident wine. G-

Malmsey: takes the wood furniture and fruit cake character of the Bual and adds in notes of treacle toffee and barley sugar and a slightly herbal edge. Again showing what seems like more than 10 years of age, heady and compelling, but with a seam of pungent citrus freshness. S+
