A look at six wines from Lidl’s upmarket range
Pouilly Fuissé 2011, Burgundy, France (£7.99 Lidl)
Quite a heavy style, honeyed with not enough fruit and some toasty sulphur notes. 0
Fleurie 2011, Burgundy, France (£6.49 Lidl)
OK raspberry earthiness, but it’s a bit sharp, and doesn’t have enough of the juicy succulence of good Beaujolais. C(-)
Puisseguin St Emilion 2011, Bordeaux, France (£6.99 Lidl)
I like the juicy, earthy redcurrant and blackcurrant flavours, but then the smoky bacon oak kicks in and rather swamps the fruit. C(+)
St Emilion Grand Cru 2010, Bordeaux, France (£9.99 Lidl)
Juicy, rounded and supple, with slightly toasty oak, but enough plummy blackberry and blackcurrant flavour to handle it. Will be better in a couple of years if you can wait. B
Chianti Riserva 2009, Tuscany, Italy (£5.99 Lidl)
Soft dusty, warm cherry and raisin, with a dab of vanilla – Chianti with a Spanish accent. OK but smells better than it tastes, and could be fresher. C+
Carmelo Ortega Saxa Loquuntur Rioja 2010, Spain (£6.99 Lidl)
Rounded plush and confident modern style Rioja, with plum and orange peel to the fore, and red berries in the background, a nice mix of freshness and richness. B+
